Levi MaVorhis, a former pitcher for the Archbishop Murphy baseball team and Freeland resident, signed with Kansas State University.

The Daily Herald’s Aaron Swaney reported the development earlier this week. MaVorhis, the Cascade Conference player of the year, was prepared to sign with Bellevue College (formerly Bellevue Community College). He’ll trade his red, black and white Wildcats jersey for a purple and silver Wildcats outfit in Manhattan, Kan. The change came during a baseball tournament in Kansas, where the pitching coach for Kansas State saw MaVorhis play and offered him a spot on the team.

The offer capped a busy year for MaVorhis, whose high school team won the state 2A baseball title where he was named the 2A player of the year. In the state title game, MaVorhis started on the mound and hit a three-run single that helped Archbishop Murphy beat Lynden 7-6 in eight innings.

Players who sign with a four-year university are not eligible for the MLB draft until after their junior year.
