Girls distance, sprinters pace Falcons at Cedarcrest meet

South Whidbey’s track and field team may have lost the Cascade Conference meet, but its top performers have their eyes fixed on something else.

At the Falcons’ first conference meet this season March 21, Lillianna Stelling set her personal record in the 3,200-meter race. The senior’s time of 11:44 puts her at eighth-place on the South Whidbey High School record board. The time was fast enough to put her at the second-best time in Washington among 1A schools.

And yes, she won first place in the event by 25 seconds.

Maybe it was the track (it was probably the miles of running and hours of conditioning), but fellow distance runner Nora Felt smashed her career time in the 1,600. The Falcon senior finished the four-lap course in 5:41.01, seven seconds faster than her previous best. Felt also finished third in the 800-meter race in 2:36.15. Teammate Jaime Rodden, a junior, claimed second place in 2:35.60.

South Whidbey’s girls sprinters were up to par, too. Anna Hood won first place in the 100-meter sprint in 13.93 seconds. Madi Boyd, a Falcon junior, finished in third place in 14.42 seconds – her career best.

The two sprinters and the top two distance runners — Hood, Boyd, Stelling and Felt — combined to win the 1,600-meter relay. The Falcons’ time of 4:32.82 was 10 seconds faster than the second-place squad from King’s.

In a fairly standard outing for senior Angelina Berger, she won both of her throwing events. Berger, a contender for the state titles in shot put and discus, marked 37 feet, 8 inches in the shot put and 103 feet, 4 inches in the discus. She finished third in the javelin at 76 feet.

On the boys team, thrower and sprinter Nick French led the way. He claimed first place in the javelin at 160 feet, 10 inches, almost 18 feet short of his career best throw. French also ran a career-best 25.15-second 200-meter race, good for third place.

Falcon boys sprinters Hunter Parrick, Jordan Parrick, Kale Reichersamer and French teamed to win the 400-meter relay in 46.88 seconds.

Andy Madsen placed second in the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches.

South Whidbey’s distance runners Cole Zink, Truman Hood, Chris Anderson and Brandon Chapman fielded a 1,600-meter relay team that finished in third place in 4 minutes, 1.96 seconds.

Caleb Hellinger, a junior, took third place in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.43 seconds.
