The South Whidbey girls soccer team has a lot riding on its match against Sultan today at 10 a.m. at Waterman’s Field.

A chance at a berth in the postseason is on the line, head coach Brian McCleary said. Following a 5-2 loss to Cedar Park Christian on Oct. 11, the Falcons (2-11-1 overall, 1-9-0 in the Cascade Conference) need to beat Sultan and hope the Turks lose to Cedar Park Christian on Oct. 17.

“Then we would be in the playoffs,” McCleary said.

There are four teams in the class 1A division of the Cascade Conference. King’s holds the top spot at 10-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in league, while South Whidbey, Sultan and Cedar Park Christian are slugging it out for the second and third berths to the district postseason match.

The Turks defeated the Falcons 3-1 in their previous match on Oct. 1 at Sultan. McCleary said the Falcons will stand a better chance this time around because South Whidbey plays on natural grass, as opposed to the Turks’ artificial field. The difference in how the game is played on turf as compared to natural grass, which turf teams are sometimes not accustomed to, can work in their favor, McCleary said.

If the Falcons can play with the same intensity that they did in a 1-0 loss to King’s on Oct. 6, they might just be able to pull it off.

“The girls are starting to click and so it’s fun to watch,” McCleary said.
