Late heroics lift Falcons to win / Baseball

A two-out run in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game, then the South Whidbey High School baseball team went on to beat visiting Sultan 3-2 in nine innings Wednesday, April 25.

The win kept the Falcons’ hopes alive to secure the second seed out of the Cascade Conference for the 1A district tournament.

South Whidbey (5-8, 8-9) trails King’s (6-8, 7-11) for the No. 2 1A spot behind Cedar Park Christian-Bothell (12-2, 13-4) with three games remaining.

The Falcons play Granite Falls (0-13, 0-18) twice sandwiched around a critical game with King’s at 4 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Langley.

South Whidbey goes to Granite Falls at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 26, and entertains the Tigers in the regular-season finale at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 1.

South Whidbey 3, Sultan 2 (nine innings)

Down 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Falcon Drew Fry walked, when to second on a passed ball and then scored on Kade Petty’s base hit.

In the ninth with two outs, Brent Batchelor scored on a passed ball to win the game.

“Not the prettiest game offensively, but my pitchers were great as we were limiting pitch counts for Friday’s important game,” coach Tom Fallon said.

Ethan Petty, Batchelor and Kody Newman shared the pitching duties, limiting the Turks (3-11, 4-13) to three hits and one earned run while striking out nine.
