Newman named co-athlete of the year by SVC | South Whidbey Sports Briefs

A quick look at sports happenings in and around South Whidbey.

Newman honored by Skagit Valley College

Caitie Newman was named co-Athlete of the Year by Skagit Valley College last week.

Newman, a graduate of the South Whidbey High School class of 2006, played volleyball, basketball and tennis at SVC — the same sports she played as a Falcon. She won the Cardinal’s Most Improved Player and Coaches Award in volleyball.

She averaged eight points and six rebounds per game to help the Cardinals to the junior college tournament last winter.

As tennis team captain, she assisted Skagit Valley to second place, coming in fifth in singles and second in doubles with partner Azusa Takahashi.

Newman will enter the University of Washington in the fall.

Her younger sister and brother, Lindsey and Riley, both competed for South Whidbey at the tennis state finals in May — Lindsey Newman captured the state 2A girl’s title for the second year in a row.

Yacht club teams up for sailboat classes

South Whidbey Parks & Recreation and the South Whidbey Yacht Club have teamed up to teach sailing classes this summer.

“We’re surrounded by water, so why not learn to navigate around the island,” said program coordinator Carrie Monforte.

Yacht club experts will provide four, 3.5-hour intensive sessions on safety skills, knot tying, rigging up and breaking down the sails on the mast.

Instruction will be given on the club’s 12-foot Pelican-class sailboats originally designed for the rough, windy waters on San Francisco Bay.

The boats are stable, safe, and easy to learn how to handle.

A bag lunch is provided and Monforte recommends shoes that can get wet and bringing a sweatshirt and windbreaker. Life vests are provided.

Each lesson is $10 but all four are available for $30.

Registration deadline is July 9. All classes are at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays starting July 16 at the Lone Lake boat ramp in Langley.

For registration details, call Monforte at 221-5484.

Tennis tournament coming next month

The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District joined with Kevin Jorgensen for a tennis tournament in July.

The event is for singles men and women 14 years or older. The cost is $15 per player.

The tournament runs from 10 a.m. for three days, Wednesday through Friday, July 11 to 13 at the South Whidbey High School tennis courts on Maxwelton Road in Langley.

For details, call Jorgensen at 360-

678-0901.

Leagues forming for dodgeball season

The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District is forming more of their popular six-on-six dodgeball leagues for the summer. The teams are for middle school, adult and coed players.

Organizers plan to use special foam “gator” balls designed for speed, accuracy and minimal risk of injury.

Players will receive a team jersey. Each team will play seven matches of three to five games and all games will be at the Sports Complex on Langley Road.

Registration deadline is today and spots are still open.

The cost is $39. For details, call Carrie Monforte at 221-5484 or visit www.swparks.org.

Whidbey Island Triathlon coming up

It’s not too early to be training for the Race the Rock triathlon in August.

On Aug. 2, hundreds of bikers will be pedaling their way through downtown Langley, on Bayview Road, over the Saratoga hills and along other streets on the South End.

The race begins at 9 a.m. with a dash into the chilly waters of Goss Lake — the buoys are set by GPS again this year to guarantee a half-mile swim — then a 19.6-mile bike ride and a 3.8-mile run through South Whidbey Community Park.

Fees this year are $50 through July 11 or $65 after for individuals. Team fees are $105 through July 11 or $135 after.

For details, call 221-5484 or visit www.swparks.org.
