The Oak Harbor High School sailing team finished first and fourth overall in the Oak Harbor Regional Regatta Saturday, Oct. 9, the second regional regatta win in a row to open the 2021-22 season.

The regatta featured some of the top teams from northern Puget Sound and Seattle, including 2021 nationals participants Ballard and rising power The Downtown School, along with rival Anacortes.

Seniors Thomas Buys and EJ Boilek led the way in A fleet in the Oak Harbor Purple boat, starting the day with two wins and finishing in the top three in the remaining four races. Buys and Boilek have dominated this fall. In ten races together, the pair has six wins, a second, and three thirds.

Buys later sealed the regatta victory for Oak Harbor Purple, winning a protest hearing against The Downtown School that rocketed the Wildcats to a nine-point victory after the final race of the day.

Senior Ryan Metz and junior Shelby Lang anchored the victorious Oak Harbor Purple team in the B division, finishing in the top half of the fleet in all six of their races, including a clutch second and sixth place finish in the last rotation to keep the event within reach for the pending Buys protest.

Oak Harbor Gold also had a tremendous day, finishing fourth overall.

Sophomore Anna Servatius and junior Allison Bailey sailed well, starting the day strong with a pair of top six finishes and kept the score close late for their B fleet boat.

Oak Harbor’s Gold’s B fleet was spectacular. Piloted by senior skipper Ben Servatius, the boat collected five podium finishes despite a rotating crew of rookie sailors. Sophomore Callie Carlson, freshman Dominic Schinning, and junior Jonathan Brady each raced two races with Servatius.
