South Whidbey 1 win from bi-district berth / Volleyball

After splitting a pair of matches on the first day of the district volleyball tournament Saturday, Oct. 27, at King’s, South Whidbey will have to win its next match to earn a trip to the bi-district playoffs.

The Falcons (10-7) play Meridian (5-12) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Lynden Christian in a loser-out match. The winner will meet the winner of Coupeville/Nooksack Valley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to determine the third and fourth seeds into the bi-district tournament.

King’s and Lynden Christian are meeting in the district championship match for the top two seeds.

Bi-district is Saturday, Nov. 3, at Meridian. If South Whidbey qualifies, its will have to win two consecutive matches (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) to earn a state berth.

South Whidbey opened the district tournament with a 3-2 loss to Nooksack Valley.

The Falcons lost the first set 25-14 and then grabbed the next two, 25-18 and 25-10. The Pioneers recovered to eke out next two and the match, 25-22, 16-14.

The Falcons’ Emma Leggett registered 15 kills, eight digs and three aces; Emma Hodson had eight kills and three blocks; Megan Leonard added five kills and two aces; Alyssa Ludtke collected six digs and two blocks; and Arianna Briggs had three kills and two blocks.

South Whidbey bounced back to blank Granite Falls 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-18).

Chloe Johnson had a strong all-around match with 28 assists, four kills and two aces, while Maya Tschetter had four aces, two kills and three assists.

Leggett led the offense with 13 kills, and Leonard had five.

Kayla Knauer chipped in with eight digs.
