South Whidbey’s girls cross country team again proved its state-ranked status. Now, they’re joined by the Falcon boys.

The Falcon girls are the third-ranked 1A team in Washington, according to a recent coaches poll. South Whidbey’s boys runners were mentioned in the poll, receiving at least one vote and missing a top-10 billing. Both teams wrapped a busy week with a Cascade Conference meet in Carnation on Thursday and an invitational in Lakewood on Saturday.

The girls team did not race and rested at the Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School. South Whidbey’s boys, with the exception of their top runner Cole Zink, who did not compete, were spread from sub-18 minute runs to 20 minutes. Falcon junior Gavin Imes set a career time of 17:55.8 and finished in 37th place overall. Freshman Chris Anderson was the second Falcon boy to finish with one of his best times of the year at 18:18.2 in only his third varsity meet. Truman Hood, a sophomore, just missed matching his personal best time by .8 seconds (19:08.8).

The boys had one day of rest after racing at a league meet Thursday. Falcon senior captain Jhamil Bader-Jarvis had a career day and smashed his previous best time by 26 seconds. Bader-Jarvis finished the 5,000-meter race at the Carnation Golf Course in 18:15.06, good for 13th-place. Zink followed close behind for 18th place in 18:27.04. Sophomore Andy Zisette was the final scorer toward South Whidbey’s team points and set his personal best time at 19:05.43 for a 25th-place finish.

South Whidbey’s girls won the conference meet at Cedarcrest’s home course. Seniors led the way against their league opponents. Lillianna Stelling took second place with her second-best 5K time of 19:39.62. Nora Felt, also a senior, improved her personal record for a second time in a week with a 20:23.25 and fifth-place finish. Falcon freshman Mallorie Mitchem finished in sixth place (20:42.17). Senior Bonnie Klamm secured seventh place in 21:01.63. Emma Lungren, a sophomore, posted her best time of 21:41.16, which put her in 10th place.

Four more runners finished with career days: senior Anna Hood (21:54.24), freshman Carson Orr (23:59.07), freshman Ellie Boone (27:43.55), and junior Caitlyn Workman (28:35.76). Freshman Lisa Haufler ran her first high school 5K in 27:43.76.
