Cheer squad sign-ups scheduled

The South Whidbey Football Association is holding sign-ups for a cheerleading squad.

There will be one team of 8- to 10-year-olds; the $150 fee includes uniform, insurance and registration. Practices will start the last week of July and there’ll be a day camp on Friday, Aug. 1.

The squad will practice twice each week for two hours in the evenings, said organizer Carolyn Streitler.

The girls will be cheering for the South Whidbey Islanders youth football team with at least three home games and may travel to other away games if there is interest.

Soccer club holds U-17 boys tryouts

The South Whidbey Youth Soccer Club will be holding tryouts for its U-17 boys team this month.

Tryouts will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at the soccer complex on Langley Road. Athletes should come ready to play with cleats and shin guards; plan to arrive by 5:15 p.m. to allow for registration.

Two LittleLeague teams win

The South Whidbey Little League team, the Rangers, defeated South Skagit 2-1 in the Ted Reep Tournament of Champions in Mount Vernon on Saturday.

It was another solid defensive performance by the Rangers as they threw out five runners. Parker Collins was dominant on the mound and Trent Fallon threw three scoreless innings in relief.

The score was 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Rangers’ Jordan Parrick advanced on a passed ball to third and stole home on the same play.

Also on Saturday, the Yankees won their opening game in the Andy Andrade Tournament by a score of 6-2 over Ferrellgas of the Burlington Little League.

CJ Sutfin pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits and striking out eight batters while walking one.

Elijah Nichols and Sutfin were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Nichols and Colton Sterba each scored two runs for the winning team.
