Baseball team loses a close one to Cedarcrest

In what would have, could have and should have been the biggest upset of the Cascade Conference this season, the Falcon boys baseball team dropped a heartbreaker to league-leader Cedarcrest by a score of 2-1 Monday.

It was all about pitching as the Red Wolves’ Cameron Padron scattered six Falcon hits through seven innings.

Padron was matched up against Falcon ace Adam Babcock who threw all nine innings for South Whidbey and scattered six hits and did not allow a walk. Babcock struck out five hitters while both runs off Babcock were unearned.

The Red Wolves picked up the game’s first run in their first at bat and then the Falcons tied it up in the bottom of the third inning.

Lucas Yale lined a one-out single then stole second base and scored on a

Robert Kirby single to left field for the Falcons only run of the day.

The Falcons had a great opportunity to put the game away in the bottom of the seventh but fell just short.

Jon Adams had a one-out walk, followed by Yale’s second hit of the day. Both runners moved on bases on a passed ball, still with only one out. Adams then broke from third on a suicide bunt but was put out as the bunt failed.

“Kirby then was robbed of a possible game-winning RBI as he hit a shot that looked through the infield,” Falcon coach Dave Guetlin said.

“The Cedarcrest first baseman made a diving grab and was able to throw out Kirby by a step at first.”

In the final Falcon innings, the boys managed to get possible winning runs into position again but were unable to come up with the big hit when needed.

For the Falcons, Brooks Guetlin and Nathan Kamps shot 38, Blake Blakey and John Lindsey tied at 39 and Tommy Boyle had 40.

“The boys did very well under the best weather conditions of the year,” Falcon coach Steve Jones said.

South Whidbey falls to Cedarcrest in fastpitch

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves got a shock Monday night when the Falcon fastpitch softball team scored four runs between the third and fifth innings.

“It was the first time they’d been scored on all season,” Falcon coach Chuck Burton said.

Unfortunately for South Whidbey, the Red Wolves had 14 runs, extending their undefeated standing to 12-0 for the year. The final score was 14-4.

The Falcons are 3-4 in league,

4-5 overall.

For South Whidbey, Allison Wood had a two-run RBI double in the third inning, driving in Amanda Spalding and Kelsie Dorpat. The second two runs were unearned following a line drive from Alannah Alber.

“We advanced on a couple Red Wolf errors,” Burton said.

At 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, the team welcomes Archbishop Murphy for a double-header at the softball field.
