Koszarek, Martin lead Falcons team

South Whidbey cross country runners Blake Koszarek and Emily Martin placed seventh and second to lead the boys and girls teams at a Cascade Conference meet Wednesday.

The Falcons ran against Archbishop Murphy, Cedarcrest and Lakewood. The course was at Lakewood and included varied terrain with significant portions on grass and gravel trails.

Koszarek ran the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 56.91 seconds, followed by Scott Stallman, 18:54.91; Ben Saari, 18:57.29; Jasper Tyler, 20:10.08; Will Zink, 23:41.88; Michael Cavender, 23:52.48; and Will Mellish in 23:52.72.

For the girls, Martin ran in 20:11.88 followed by Caroline Habel, 20:27.16; Cassie Bosman, 20:52.31; Chantal White, 20:54.05; Jessica Cary, 21:56.92; Courtney Bosman, 22:20.82; Taya Jae, 22:33.87; Marina Kovic, 23:01.97; McKenzie Walker, 23:19.67; Michela Mattens, 24:03.45; Natalie Wheeler, 24:04.48; Jennifer Gemkow, 24:53.33; Liana Cave, 26:52.58; and AJ Janda, 26:55.81.

Girls split the week in volleyball

The South Whidbey volleyball team has been on the road this week, first to Sultan on Tuesday, then Kings on Thursday. Results were mixed.

The Falcon girls beat the Turks in three games, 25-11, 25-13 and 25-20.

Lindsey Newman had four kills and Allison Wood had six for the Falcons.

“It’s tough playing a team that is not quite at the level they should be, so trying to stay intense and excited was a challenge,” Falcon coach Mandy Jones said. “But we managed to get the job done, and the long bus trip home was a little easier.”

But at Kings, the girls lost 22-25, 18-25 and 19-25.

“We were right in there, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t have beat them,” Jones said. “Katie Holt had seven blocks and Allison had eight kills. These numbers should have been a lot higher, and more of the girls should have had higher numbers in blocking and hitting as well.”

Jones added that the Falcon’s offense needs to pick up the pace — substantially.

“We have been working really hard at practice learning different offensive play strategies, but for some reason we have a hard time executing them in a match. All the teams we have played so far seem to have one or two secret weapons, Well, I want six secret weapons on the court, and that is what we are going to work on beginning today at the invite.”

At 9 a.m. today, the girls welcome 15 schools to Erikson Gym for the annual South Whidbey Invitational.

Falcon soccer maintains pace

On Tuesday, the South Whidbey girls soccer team beat Sultan 5-0.

Karissa Thomas scored two goals and Morgan Thomson, Megan Larmore and Jessica Manca each scored a goal to help the Falcons [2-2 league, 3-2 overall] to a Cascade Conference victory over Sultan [0-3, 0-5]. Goalie Natasha Kamps recorded the shutout for South Whidbey.

Against a tough, undefeated Kings squad, the girls fell 3-0. King’s goalkeeper Carolyn Dapper recorded the shutout and had a pair of assists as the Knights [4-0 league, 6-0 overall] defeated the Falcons in league action. Hillary Zevenbergen, Kendal Thoreson and Taylor Hauck scored goals for the Knights.

At 2 p.m. today, the girls welcome the Granite Falls Tigers to Waterman Field.
