Trojans end South Whidbey’s season / Soccer

Meridian eliminated the South Whidbey High School soccer team from the bi-district playoffs by beating the Falcons 2-0 Thursday, Nov. 1, at Whatcom Community College.

“Our team came out a little slow and gave up both goals in the first 15 minutes,” South Whidbey coach Terry Swanson said. “I think we were a little fatigued having played a double overtime game two nights earlier. Meridian had a bye being a higher seed.”

Midway through the first half, the Falcons began to match the Trojans’ intensity, according to Swanson, and created several scoring opportunities.

Kelly Murnane and Ashley Ricketts both fired shots off the cross bar.

“Meridian had a strong defense and we had to work hard for our scoring opportunities,” Swanson said. “Overall, our team played a strong game and our players left everything on the field, but this year Meridian was a little stronger.”

South Whidbey (11-8-1) will return 15 of its 17 players next year.
