Weather pushes back spring games

Rain and sleet on South Whidbey and heavy snow farther north kept South Whidbey High School athletic teams off the field over the weekend and on Monday, forcing some rescheduling.
During the past week, the Falcon baseball team has been rained out for games against Anacortes, Ingraham and Coupeville, while the fastpitch softball team has yet to see competition after watching games against Sequim and Burlington-Edison get washed away.
A makeup tennis meet between the Falcon girls and Lakewood was rained out Monday, while 5 inches of snow in Lynden forced the normally weatherproof soccer players from that city to avoid traveling to a Monday matchup with the Falcon boys on Waterman Field.
John Patton, the school’s athletic director, said it is getting difficult to reschedule games within the existing schedule. Some North Cascades Conference matchups may have to wait until the end of the regular season, while a few non-conference contests may get canceled altogether if the snow and rain does not abate.
“We’ll try to pack them together,” he said.
Rescheduled events this week include a makeup fastpitch road game between the Falcons and Burlington-Edison Thursday, re-scheduled junior varsity and varsity soccer games Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. on Waterman Field, and one more stab at a South Whidbey-Lakewood tennis match-up at home Wednesday.
Patton said he is still looking for open dates for makeup baseball games.
