Yes, it’s that time of year again. Summer vacation is almost over and South Whidbey students and teachers are preparing for the first day of school, Sept. 4.
The biggest change for the start of school this year is in the new kindergarten schedule. Some students will be attending Mondays, Wednesdays and some Fridays and others will attend Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Fridays.
Parents of kindergartners will be receiving letters by the end of the month letting them know the orientation schedule on Sept. 4. At that time parents will receive calenders of the exact days their students will be in class. The day-long, tuition-based kindergarten is full at this time.
Primary school students — first and second-graders — class placements will be posted on the office windows at the school after 4 p.m. on Aug. 28. Along with these placements will be a list of necessary school supplies for students. Primary school classes will being at 8:55 a.m. and end at 3:25 p.m.
Any students K-2 who have not registered, may do so at the primary school from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. beginning this week.
Intermediate school students will be attending class from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this year. New students may register at the office at the intermediate school 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office will be closed from noon to 1 p.m. Class lists will be posted after 4 p.m. on Aug. 28.
Third-grade students and their parents are invited to an orientation and ice cream social from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 21.
Langley Middle School is open for new student registration 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Middle school students may pick up their class schedules on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or Aug. 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Uniforms for physical education classes are $14 and student assignment planners ($2.50) will be available for purchase on those dates.
A special sixth-grade orientation for parents and students will be held on Aug. 28, 9 to 11 a.m. at Langley Middle School.
South Whidbey High School students will hear their first bell every school day this year at 7:25 a.m., with classes beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m.
Free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs are available at all schools. Regular lunch prices are $1.75; $1 for breakfast. Parents must re-apply for free and reduced-price lunches every year. Applications will be sent home with all students on the first day of school.
