Falcon tennis up above it

It hasn’t been a great start to the season for the Falcon girls tennis team.

Sure, they’ve been winning, but so far, they’ve only had the chance to do so twice in three weeks.

Since defeating 3A Anacortes 4-3 on March 15, the girls have been rained out of meets against Burlington, Friday Harbor, Darrington and Lynden. So on Thursday, it was a largely untried team that took to the court for the team’s home opener against Coupeville.

If the idea was to knock the rain-inspired rust off against the Wolves, the Falcons were disappointed as they won handily, 6-1. Coupeville’s players put up almost no fight, handing South Whidbey 6-0, 6-0 victories in three singles and one doubles match, as well as two more relatively easy wins in doubles competition.

The only Falcon to get a hard-fought match was No. 1 singles player Janelle Iversen. Iversen lost her match, which was a comparative marathon, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.

Singles winners for the team were Caitie Newman, Sonya Morphew and Megan Roosen-Runge, all with straight-set shutouts.

At doubles, the Falcons’ No. 3 team of Natalie Alexander and Lily Fox was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner, which got them off the court in time to watch No. 2 doubles teammates Chelsea Miller and Anna Gilles finish an entertaining, volley-heavy 6-4, 6-2 match.

Also winning on the day was the No. 1 South Whidbey pairing of Jenny Newman and Amy Vogt, who dispatched their Coupeville opponents 6-1, 6-3.

The Falcons play next, weather permitting, on April 16 against Sedro Woolley at home.
