Samuel Mattson

Samuel Denny Mattson, 54, passed away Friday morning Oct. 7, 2005.

He was the former owner of Bush Point Boat House, and a friend to so many. Previous to his boathouse career, Sam was an accomplished vibraphone/jazz musician known as Sammy Rivas who preformed with such greats as Quincy Jones and Miles Davis.

Sam made his home on Whidbey Island for well over 20 years.

Sam was born on Oct. 29, 1950, the youngest son of three to Robert Lyman Mattson and Velda Virginia Mattson, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. His godfather was Dave Beck, former president of the Teamsters Union.

Sam is preceded in death by his mother, father and beloved brother Paul Mattson. Sam is survived by his live-in companion Brenda Williams; his eldest brother Gary E. Mattson and wife Suzi Mattson; nephew Robert R. Mattson. He is also survived by his niece Melody Griffin, nephew Timothy Mattson and wife Kim Mattson with their children.

A lovely memorial service for Sam was held for his family and friends by Pastor Jim Lindus at Trinity Lutheran Church on Oct. 13, and was followed by a celebration of Sam’s life at the Eagles Club.

All who knew and loved Sam are invited to a final farewell to be held at 2 p.m. today at Bush Point.
