It was an emotional night Thursday in Erickson Gym as six senior girls — Catie Newman, Sara Hicks, Marie Enell, Jessi Eaton, Janelle Iverson and Silver Keck — were honored before a huge crowd of fans, parents and well-wishers. There were a few tears and lots of hugs.

Then the ladies hit the court and smashed Archbishop Murphy in four games: 25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 25-17.

The Lady Falcons played with spirit, verve and confidence marked by an ever-smiling Iverson, on the mend after having her appendix removed several weeks ago.

“This was one of our best matches of the year,” Falcons Coach Tim Durbin said.

“The word for tonight was defense. These gals kept the ball in play and really scrapped with a solid team,” he said.

Jessi Eaton had 31 assists, Caitie Newman 12 kills and 10 digs, Silver Keck eight kills and three digs, Sara Hicks six kills and seven digs.

On Monday, South Whidbey (7-5 in Cascade Conference, 8-6 overall) plays Lynnwood in a crossover match.

The trick will be to win and the treat is this game decides who goes on to district and who is done for the season.

Cedarcrest (11-1, 13-1) and Shorecrest (6-3, 9-5), by virtue of being the top 3A teams in their conferences, get automatic placement in districts.

The second-place teams and Lynnwood (4-5, 6-8) play for the last district spot. The loser is done.

“If we win the game on Monday, we will be the eighth seed in districts and will play Anacortes on Wednesday night at Ferndale High School,” Durbin said.
