The South Whidbey High School football team overcame a plague of turnovers and penalties to beat Lakewood 42-21 in the first Cascade Conference game of the season Friday night.

Falcon quarterback Hunter Rawls stayed cool in the pocket while launching a ground attack led by running backs Henry Mead and Danny Zuver. Nick Tenuta and Mead had one touchdown each while Zuver scored a record four times.

Lakewood coach Dan Teeter said he was surprised at the number of turnovers suffered by both sides.

“The Falcons have a lot of talent on their roster and I predict they’ll win a lot of games,” he said.

“They hit hard and were in great condition. Tonight was a good high school football game. Good, but not always pretty.”

The unbeaten Falcons are 1-0 in league play and 3-0 overall and have outscored their first three opponents 106 to 35.

On Friday, Sept. 26 the Falcons travel to Duvall to play Cedarcrest.
