Roxy Etherton is retiring from her position as postmaster of the Greenbank Post Office, a job she has held since 1993.
Etherton served 32 years with the postal service, coming to Greenbank after having served as Superintendent of Support Services at the Bellevue Post Office for 17 years.
Her entry into a career with the United States postal system stemmed from her memories of her grandparents’ life in rural Idaho.
“The mail carrier was also the postmaster, and sometimes the only person my grandparents would see for a long time,” Etherton said.
Etherton said her grandmother would invite the postmaster in for tea and read her tea leaves.
“I like the human element of working for the post office. I’ll miss the people the most,” she said.
Etherton said she’ll take a couple of months off before she starts up her new business, “Whidbey Island Handy Mam.”
