Sad attempt to improve nature | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

The story about the proposed funicular on Cascade Avenue in Langley included this: “The funicular could also help spur other improvements along the Cascade Avenue promenade.”

I find it sad but apparently true that there will always be people who want to “improve” on nature. The view along Cascade has long been one of my favorites on South Whidbey. When I moved to Langley in 2005 at an emotional low point, my daily walks along Cascade were a great comfort — greenery, water, mountains.  Nothing quite like it to soothe a human soul. I’m not sure how soothing it would have been to see a funicular and its mechanical system or the possible viewing platforms or celebrations also mentioned in the article.

I’m not opposed to bringing new life to Langley, but I think Langley plays a risky game of dice any time it wants to sacrifice its natural beauty and serenity for “improvements.” I’m very happy that I lived in Langley when I did and had that beautiful, unimproved walk to look forward to every single day.
