Sam Lungren of Freeland has been awarded a $500 Mark Henckel Scholarship and a $2,200 Louis M. and Dorothy MacLane Thayer Journalism Scholarship from the University of Montana.
Lungren is a UM graduate student in journalism. He is a 2007 graduate of South Whidbey High School and the son of Kevin and Mary Jane Lungren of Freeland.
The Mark Henckel Scholarship honors the first outdoors editor of the Billings Gazette, where he worked for nearly 38 years. The scholarship fund was established by Henckel’s family and colleagues at the Gazette to support UM graduate students majoring in journalism.
Dorothy “Marge” Thayer established the journalism scholarship to honor her parents and her father’s newspaper career in Montana.
