Radio operators from the Island County Amateur Radio Club will demonstrate how they make radio contact with other radio buffs thousands of miles away during the upcoming Whidbey Island Fair.

The 88th annual Whidbey fair, to be held Aug. 16 through 19 at the county fairgrounds located at 819 Camano Ave. in Langley, will feature a wide variety of farm, art and craft exhibits and will include a functioning amateur radio transmitting station housed in the Burrier building.

Members of the local radio club will be available at noon Friday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 19, and at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, to demonstrate how they contact other radio hams and discuss the hobby and its federal licensing requirements.

The club also will assist city and county officials during the Whidbey Island Fair parade on Saturday morning, with point-to-point communications along the route in case of emergencies.
