Richard Smith

In his usual understated way, Richard L. “Dick” Smith quietly slipped away on March 10, 2013 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Dick was born in Ketchikan, AK on August 10, 1941 and later his family moved to West Seattle where he graduated from Sealth High School in 1959.
After graduating from Edison Technical College with a shipwright certificate, Dick went to work for Ron Rawson Boat Company building fishing and pleasure boats. When Rawson closed 25 years later, Dick worked for Nordic Tug for a number of years before retiring.
Dick enjoyed woodworking, all types of car racing, and traveling. In the last 20 years of his life he and Rosie were able to visit most of the U.S. and over 25 foreign countries. He was active in the South Whidbey Lions Club and attended Langley United Methodist Church.
Dick is survived by his wife, Rosemary, his daughter, Kari Castonguay (Leo), four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his brother, Bruce, a niece, a nephew and his Aunt Zoe.
A Celebration of Dick’s life will be held March 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club.
Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Langley United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or a charity of your choice.
