Letter: Willeford will bring about change to school district

School board candidate Brook Willeford is a refreshing choice in the election this year – and you don’t have to live in Langley to vote for him.

It is no secret many in the community have lost trust in district leadership. Salary negotiations with teachers, declining enrollment, administrative salary increases and an overall lack of transparency have resulted in a sense of stagnation and low morale.

While the current board has made some positive efforts to improve their communication, it has been too little too late. What we need is a change in the makeup of the board itself.

Brook, along with other like-minded board members, will be in a position to free up the current log jam and create a positive flow that meets our community’s need for change.

He is a graduate of the district. He understands our community and he values its traditions. A young dad, he speaks the language and understands the problems facing today’s parents and today’s youth. His education and background are in marketing, communication, technology and game design. He gets it. He is also up-to-date on education: his wife is a teacher in Coupeville and the co-president of their union.

Brook’s parents are long-time contributors to the South Whidbey community and the owners of the Clyde Theater. Besides taking on management of the Clyde, he is continuing their strong legacy of community engagement. It’s in his DNA.

Brook’s enthusiasm is contagious. Not only does he have a lot of good ideas about how to improve the district’s communication and interaction with the community, he is also a wonderful listener.
