Published 1:30 am Friday, April 1, 2022

The South Whidbey Tilth Association has a series of workshops, tours and talks planned throughout April.

Dan Vorhis, a fruit horticulturist and Freeland orchard owner, will share a presentation on apple tree bench grafting from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 9 at the Bayview Cash Store at 5603 Bayview Road.

A hands-on lab will follow Vorhis’s lecture. All participants will have an opportunity to practice cuts and graft one apple tree. Rootstock, scion wood and other materials will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring their own grafting knives if they have one. Otherwise, they may borrow a knife from the instructor. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult to handle the knife work.

The event costs $20 per person. To RSVP, contact education@southwhidbeytilth.org.

The tour will feature information about the breeds of chickens, unique structures and how they relate to the gardens they are in. Types of feed, waterers, bedding, regular maintenance, composting the manure and predator proofing will also be covered.

The tour costs $5 for Tilth members and $15 for non-members. To RSVP, contact education@southwhidbeytilth.org.
