The Oak Harbor High School’s basketball season kicked off on Saturday with an annual tradition.

The event, called Night Out with Cats, has been held to celebrate the upcoming season for the past five or six years, according to the girls varsity basketball coach Eric Collins.

For the student athletes, it’s an opportunity to don a Wildcats jersey and play scrimmages against each other. This year, the varsity girls team played the freshman boys. It’s also an opportunity for referees to get some practice in before the games commence.

There were three-point contests for high school students, as well as contests and obstacle courses for younger kids who play in youth leagues. About 20 children participated.

Collins said he is excited about the upcoming season.

“We have a nice blend of veteran experienced leadership with some upcoming youth freshmen and sophomores to help out,” he said. “It should be a good season.”
