Langley records moving to church

This week, the relocation process began for the abundance of city records stored in the basement of the Langley Library, which is set to undergo renovation soon.

Langley Mayor Scott Chaplin announced during a city council meeting Monday night that Sno-Isle Libraries has hired professional movers to shift the copious amount of records to the Langley United Methodist Church, which is located a couple blocks away from the library and city hall.

The city has signed a month-to-month lease for storage of the records in the church’s former youth room for $200. The room is not part of the HUB’s after-school program for kids.

Storage of the records became a hot topic earlier this year, when the council realized the necessity of moving them as soon as possible so as not to inhibit the library’s $3 million remodel project. Although the records have resided in the library’s basement for years, the lower level of the building will undergo renovation.

Chaplin plans to follow the lead of other cities by digitizing the records. He said he plans to get rid of 80% of the records in six months. In a previous Record article, he stated that the downstairs level of the library contained 13 bookshelves, 180 boxes and 15 file cabinets, many of which were empty. The clutter also included office supplies, surplus chairs and holiday decorations.
