Letter: Voters should support their local libraries

Editor,

I am writing to remind readers that there is an important election date coming up on Aug. 4, in which voters will have an opportunity to show their love and support for local libraries. Watch for mail-in ballots arriving soon to voters. A vote “yes” will help the doors stay open to provide access to not only the magical world of books, but also many other services of which many folks may not be aware. Not only are the Sno-Isle Libraries full of good books and other reading material for their communities, but they also provide other services, such as community educational and entertainment programs for all ages, support childhood early learning and development opportunities, internet access, printing services, meeting spaces, access to technology, world-wide connections for research and more, much more.

A vote “yes” for Sno-Isle Prop 1 will help ensure continued availability of these amazing services.

As a career educator and having served on a variety of boards, committees and such for local libraries, I never cease to be amazed at how much a community library has to offer its communities, and the high level of efficiency with which they operate. The libraries are truly a bastion for learning and for democracy itself.

I remember our now-grown sons as very young children carefully sliding a chair up to the library counter where they would enthusiastically sign out their latest treasures/books and wait with anticipation for then Coupeville librarian Carol Dyer to carefully stamp a return date in the front of the book. That they are both avid readers to this day is due in no small part to the magic of the Coupeville and other local libraries over the years.

Your “yes” vote on Sno-Isle Prop 1 is critical to keeping alive the legacy of wonder that is your local library.
