Construction sends Falcons on road

School sports teams on the South End will be hitting the road quite a bit this upcoming school year.

The track and athletic field at South Whidbey Middle and High School will remain closed until spring 2027, according to the district. Construction began in June and will update the facilities as part of a larger renovation project taking place at the district’s elementary, middle and high school campuses funded by an $80 million bond that voters passed in 2023.

That means the varsity football team will play every game away from home except one, which will be held elsewhere on Whidbey Island, according to a district newsletter Friday. The exception is the week five game against Cedar Park Christian.

Further, girls’ soccer home games will be played on the upper field above Castle Park at South Whidbey Community Park, according to the high school’s website.

Playing nearly every game away from home also means the high school will lose fundraising opportunities that come with hosting games. Superintendent Becky Clifford promised updates on “creative ways to show our school spirit and support our student programs this fall,” the newsletter states.

The district expects teams to have largely home schedules for the 2027-28 school year.
