John Robert “Jack” Miller: August, 7, 1940 – July, 18, 2026

John Robert “Jack” Miller of Coupeville, Washington,passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, surrounded by his sons, Jeff and Jason, shortly before his 86th birthday.

Jack was born on August 7, 1940, in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in Bay Village, Ohio. He attended Ohio University, where he met Laurel “Lori” Kandel. After college, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Following his discharge from the Army, Jack and Lori married, started their family and lived in several communities in Ohio and New Jersey before moving to Washington in 1977.

A lifelong sports fan, one of Jack’s favorite childhood memories was listening to the Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series from his elementary school boiler room, where he had been assigned to provide inning-by-inning updates to the classrooms. After moving to Washington, he became an enthusiastic supporter of Seattle sports. He and Lori purchased Seahawks season tickets soon after arriving, and the tickets remain in the family today. He also never entirely gave up his allegiance to the Cleveland Browns. He fondly recalled attending the first Monday Night Football game ever played in Cleveland, featuring the Browns against the New York Jets and Joe Namath.

Jack spent over four decades in the insurance industry. He began his career in Lakewood, Ohio, with the Insurance Company of North America (INA), later Cigna, and moved his family west after a stop in Philadelphia to help establish the company’s Bellevue office. He developed lasting friendships through his work, including several that continued throughout his life.

Jack and Lori first made their home in Bothell and later moved to Coupeville, where they retired. Jack enjoyed boating, fishing and crabbing in Puget Sound; golfing at Whidbey Golf and Country Club; cycling during his early retirement years; and attending arts and crafts fairs with Lori, where they were regulars for many years. Their Coupeville home became a frequent gathering place for family and friends. Jack and Lori were married for 54 years before her death in 2018. He was also preceded in death by their oldest son, Michael, in 2023.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff and Jason; his daughter, Adela; his brother, Rob; his sister, Sue; Jason’s wife, Beth; his grandchildren, Zach, Tyler, Bayley and Brayden; and his great-grandchildren, Arianna, Abel and Ellie.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville. A reception will follow at the family home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a Whidbey Island charity of the donor’s choice.
