Explore nature in an ADA-friendly walk

Published 1:30 am Friday, December 19, 2025

Whidbey Audubon Society is offering a unique opportunity on the solstice for those with physical challenges.

Madrone Ruggiero will lead a field trip at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, on the paved Bounty Loop Trail on South Whidbey.

The field trip is focused on general nature observation of both flora and fauna. In addition to looking and listening for winter forest birds (kinglets, thrushes, wrens, chickadees), participants can search for mushrooms, mosses, plants, slugs, snails and any other interesting things to be found.

The trail is an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible loop trail. It is approximately 0.3 miles long and is partially paved and partially hard packed gravel. The pace will be a slow wander with many stops while searching for things along the path.

All are welcome. Service animals only please, no pets. The trail is located just north of Freeland off Mutiny Bay Road on the northwest corner of Bounty Loop. There is ADA parking at trailhead, but no restroom.

Anyone with questions may contact the trip leader, Madrone at poultrypalace@yahoo.com.
