The South Whidbey Youth Soccer Club U-11 boys continued their playoff run by defeating the Aberdeen Flaming Smurfs.
“We pretty much dominated,” said Islanders coach Steve Miles.
The Islanders won 3-0 at South Whidbey High School on Saturday on three goals by midfielder Kody Newman. The match was in the quarterfinals of the Washington State Youth Soccer Association recreational league tournament.
Kody scored two goals in the first half, both assisted by Jakob Bagley. Cormac Workman assisted the third goal.
“That kid, he wants it bad,” Miles said of Kody. “He’s a terror on the field, like his brothers and sisters.”
Elisha Sergeant and Jakob both covered the goal for the Islanders to preserve a shutout. They didn’t see much action, however, as the Islanders midfielders and forwards kept possession and stayed on the Smurfs’ half of the field.
“Our offense maintained possession pretty much the whole time,” Miles said. “They did really good passing the ball. They kept pressure on. The defense did not let anything go by them. I think the goalies only had a couple saves.”
South Whidbey finished its regular season at 6-2-2 and won two matches in the district tournament to advance to the regional quarterfinals.
The Islanders won 2-1 and 7-0 and advanced because they allowed fewer goals to be scored on them than another team that also won both district matches.
“The whole team worked together really well,” Miles said.
The Islanders travel to Tukwila to play against the West Seattle Crush today. If South Whidbey wins, it plays again in the championship later in the afternoon.
The team was guided to its league-best record by Jakob Bagley, Satya Fawcett, Adam Guempel, Julian Inches, Connor McDanniel, Sean Miles, Kody Newman, Jonathon Price, Elisha Sergeant, Anthony Turnbull-Agnew, Jeremiah Walters, Jacob Winn and Cormac Workman.
