To the editor:
This letter is being shared with you to express support for Tom Fisher in the upcoming school board election. Tom and his wife, Mary, have lived on South Whidbey for more than 25 years. Tom and Mary have raised three children who have all gone through the public schools here and on to graduate from the University of Washington.
Tom and Mary have managed to build both a beautiful home and a thriving nursery as they raised their children here. Tom is not only a gifted cabinet-maker, actor and musician, (some would say a real “character”), but has given many valuable hours of community service as he headed the Smart Growth Coalition for two years and watchdogged the implementation of the county’s comprehensive plan as required by the state’s Growth Management Act.
We believe Tom Fisher will be an outstanding addition to our current school board. He is an ardent believer in the importance of public education, community service and meaningful, dynamic instruction for students.
In his own words, “We have so much potential here on the island. Rather than an emphasis on gearing down for financial survival, which of course will always need scrutiny, we should see crisis as an opportunity for creative, innovative thinking. We can be empowered by our sense of place, an increased sense of local resource (whether it be intellectual, artistic or agricultural), and an appreciation of just what it is that makes our spot on Earth so special.”
The decisions that are being made by our current board and administration are challenging and huge in their impact, affecting programs and sites for many years to come. Tom has the common sense, expertise and local knowledge necessary in helping to guide our schools in these important decisions.
Please take the time to vote for Tom Fisher in this November’s school board election.
