Soroptimist awards scholarships, grants

Soroptimist International of South Whidbey Island held its spring grants and awards meeting Thursday, May 17 at Useless Bay Golf & Country Club.

Soroptimist International of South Whidbey Island held its spring grants and awards meeting Thursday, May 17 at Useless Bay Golf & Country Club.

Grants were given to Helping Hand of South Whidbey, represented by Rosemary Martin; Island Girl’s Camp, represented by Diana Bublitz; IDIPIC, represented by Jean Gervais; South Whidbey Cooperative Preschool, represented by Kris McRae; Ryan’s House, represented by Lori Cavender; Big Brothers Big Sisters, represented by Michaela Marx-Wheatley; Hope, represented by Melissa Jacobe; Readiness to Learn, represented by Ann Johnson; Kickin and Screamin, represented by Gail Pierce; and Island County Public Health Hand-washing Kiosk, represented by Kathleen Parvin.

Grants were also given to South Whidbey Schools Discretionary Fund at South Whidbey High School, Bayview School and Langley Middle School.

Awards and scholarships presented were: Violet Richardson Award to Chelsey Schultz; Mary Broderick Scholarship to Marina Kovic and Holly Huey; Professional/Technical Award to Cassieann Levee; Women’s Opportunity Award to Kimberley Jones; Ruby Award for Women Helping Women to Gene White; and the Fellowship Award to Brittany Gallagher.

Soroptimist members and the event organizers said they were proud of all the recipients and grateful to the community for its assistance in the fundraising efforts that allow the group to present the grants, awards and scholarships
