LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Island Transit’s board just doesn’t get it

Editor,
I couldn’t agree more with your editorial about the transit board actions in selecting an interim director. They do not seem to get it.
They were charged with supervising the supervision of the transit system. They failed in that duty as defined by the state audit.
They are now charged with fixing the mess that they contributed to. One of the challenges they face is to restore the faith of the public in the system they oversee. Deciding we did not need to see the resumes of the applicants does not restore our faith. Not letting us see the interviews does not restore our faith. Choosing a candidate who has a questionable history does not restore our faith. Choosing a candidate who does not respond to the Whidbey Record request for an interview or at least a comment does not restore our faith.
Doing things the way they did them while getting into this mess does not instill a great feeling of confidence. They do not get it. It is time to open their processes to the public at every opportunity. Show us why we should trust them. Or at least show us that they care enough to let us watch their process.
They do not get it.
Sincerely,
THOM PERMENTER
Seattle
