Steven Smith

Published September 9, 2007

Steven Douglas Smith Sr. passed away suddenly on Sept. 9, 2007. He was 54.

Steve, a resident of South Whidbey for almost 20 years, was born in Kenosha, Wisc. on May 7, 1953.

Steve was father to five children; Richard, Andrea, Steven Jr., Daniel and Laura. Richard and Andrea had both flown from the nest when in 1988 he moved to South Whidbey to raise his three youngest.

His children were his life. Steve would, and often did, give his children the shirt off of his back or the last dollar in his pocket.

He was a lover of motorcycles, enjoying the freedom of the ride. Steve was a fan of Anacortes’ “Oyster Run.” He loved animals of all kinds. He was a great caretaker of all things canine, feline, bovine, avian and reptilian. His appreciation and care of animals was passed on to his children, who often felt they had brothers and sisters of different species.

One of the greatest joys of Steve’s life happened on

Sept. 14, 2006, when Kaileyn Marissa Smith was born to his son Daniel, making Steve a new grandfather. Steve’s love and pride for his new granddaughter seemed to cast a glow around them both.

Steve is survived by his children, Andrea, Steven, Daniel and Laura; grandchildren Kaileyn, Nathaniel, Benjamin and Nicholas; his mother, Alava; and brother, John. He is preceded in death by his son Richard; father, John, and best friend Rick Nichols.

The sum of a great mans life is not made by these few paragraphs, but by the love and respect felt in the hearts and memories of family and friends. Steve, our beloved father, grandpa, son and friend will be missed.
