Monday night the eighth-grade Langley Middle School Cougar varsity basketball team crushed Darrington 50-16.
“I believe this game was a good opportunity for the entire team to get varsity playing time and a chance to work on execution both offensively and defensively,” Cougar Coach Dave Adams said.
Each player only got in six minutes playing time.
A solid starting core of varsity players are led by Jordan Thornley (11 points scored) and Jon Poolman (7). Other varsity players include Hunter Rawls (6), Dakota “Duck” Hanna, Shelby Ball, Adam West, Ian McCauley and Nic McDermott.
The Cougars are 3-1 with wins over Lakewood, Granite Falls and Darrington.
“Our only loss to date was at King’s, a very emotional and intense overtime defeat by a single point,” Adams recalled.
“It was also our only loss of the season last year (9-1). But we beat them in the second meeting hope to do the same this year as we keep improving.
“The whole team is known for playing hard, playing together and having fun, aspects that we hope carry over as life skills,” Adams added. “We also focus on awareness, trust and execution as well as the skills to develop their basketball game and athletic ability.”
It wasn’t the only win on the Cougar hardwood this week. Earlier, the seventh-grade varsity boys basketball team defeated Darrington 51-33 behind “the great play of the dynamic duo, Riley Newman and Pat Myatt,” Coach Henry Pope said.
“Throughout the entire game both boys brought great pressure offensively and defensively with the help of our ‘bigs,’ Ben Cary and William Hallberg. It was just too much for Darrington to handle. This brings our season record to 3-1 with previous wins over Lakewood (56-25) and Granite Falls (58-24) and our single loss to King’s (43-53).”
Here is this year’s seventh-grade varsity team: Riley Newman, Austin Bennett, Pat Myatt, Tyler Norris, Devin Grigsby, Miles Goodman, Ben Cary and William Hallberg.
Tomorrow at 5 p.m., both teams welcome the Coupeville Wolves to the middle school gym in Langley.
