A Freeland man who allegedly sold explosive material to an undercover cop will appear in court next week.
Thelan Hutchinson, 32, will appear in Island County Superior Court on Monday, Oct. 30 for a discovery hearing. Hutchinson is being held on $500,000 bail in the Island County Jail
Hutchinson was arrested Sept. 28 for allegedly selling one-half pound of C-4, a variety of plastic explosives used by the military.
Andrea Vingo, deputy prosecutor for Island County, charged Hutchinson with possession of explosives without a license and stolen property, a Class C felony.
If Hutchinson is convicted he could be sentenced up to 365 days in jail.
The incident began at Freeland Park last month when an undercover officer allegedly purchased the explosives from Hutchinson for $450 dollars. Hutchinson was arrested for sale and possession of explosives, possession of stolen property, possession of a dangerous weapon and obstructing police, according to Cmdr. Mike Beech of the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
The effort was a joint operation of the Island County Sheriff’s Office, the Oak Harbor Police Department, the Naval Criminal Investigation Service and the State Patrol’s canine unit.
