Paradise for four-legged shoppers opened

A new pet store has opened in Langley Village on Second Street. It’s not a shop where you can buy a pet, but a place for your pet to shop.

Mykens is a specialty pet boutique featuring items that celebrate the relationship between pets and their people.

“We have everything a pet could possibly want,” said owner Karen Shetler.

Shetler should know what animals want. She graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in psychology/animal behavior.

Mykens opened its doors in Issaquah’s historic Gilman Village more than two decades ago. The boutique was established as a result of a lifelong passion for animals and a visit to the world’s oldest and largest dog show.

Shetler moved her store to Langley in early October, and her business comes highly recommended.

Mykens was voted “Best Pet Store” by the people of the Pacific Northwest and Citysearch.com.

Shetler’s passion for animals inspired her to open the boutique.

But while Shetler owns the business, a boisterous boy named Dakotah and his supercharged sidekick Piper run the show. The two shelties hang out at the store with Shetler and are just as much part of the atmosphere as the fine pet specialties that line the shelves. Shetler also shares her home with a sophisticated Balinese cat named Cassie.

The store offers an eclectic collection of designer products, including pet accessories, gourmet treats, toys and all-natural pet foods.

The gourmet treats are very popular, Shetler said. They are made with high-quality, human-grade ingredients.

“Some of them smell good enough to eat with a cup of coffee,” Shetler said with a smile.

Mykens also specializes in breed-specific merchandise and gifts for pet lovers.

Another hit is the store’s pet clothing. Doggie duds and feline fashions have become a phenomena in recent years.

“It’s kind of a fashion thing,” Shetler said. “My dogs wear it not because it is cold, but because they look cute,” she said.

In Langley, life vests for the seafaring dogs and rain coats have been popular, Shetler said. But as it becomes colder, sweaters and jackets are also in demand.

Bejeweled getups with splashy colors and other items are also part of the selection. Some might say they’re the cat’s meow.

And pets are always welcome to sniff around Mykens for a good deal.
