South Whidbey picks up pair of wins / Boys basketball

Two wins over the weekend helped the South Whidbey High School boys basketball team even its season record at 3-3 as it heads into its first North Sound Conference game.

The Falcons handled their big neighbors to the north, Oak Harbor, 65-52 Friday, Dec. 7, in Langley, then beat host Bush 58-42 Saturday.

Next up is the league opener when Cedar Park Christian (0-4) comes to town at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14.

South Whidbey 65, Oak Harbor 52

Nick Young scored 6 points in the first quarter to help the Falcons take a 15-14 lead.

The second period was the difference maker. Kody Newman tallied 9 points and Carson Wrightson 5, and South Whidbey outscored the Wildcats 19-4 to go into the locker room with 34-18 lead.

Oak Harbor trimmed a few points off the Falcons’ lead in the third quarter, but South Whidbey still led by 12, 41-29, going into the final period.

Newman pumped in 16 points in the high-scoring fourth quarter, and the Falcons held off the Wildcats by making 15 of 18 free throws. For the game, South Whidbey hit 28 of 33 fouls shots. Oak Harbor made 11 of 18.

Newman scored a game-high 30 points, and Wrightson added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Levi Buck had 9 points, Young 7, Kole Nelson 3 and Sterling Patton 2. Nelson also had six rebounds.

Dorian Hardin scored 22 points for Oak Harbor (1-3).

South Whidbey 58, Bush 42

The Falcons, with 11 points from Wrightson, pulled away in the fourth quarter. South Whidbey held a 6-point lead, 37-31, heading into the final period and then outscored the Blazers 21-11.

Even though South Whidbey committed five turnovers in the first quarter, it led 10-9.

In the second period, Newman scored 9 points and Patton hit a pair from beyond the arc to help South Whidbey scoot to a 28-19 lead at the break.

Newman collected 23 points, five rebounds and five assists. Wrightson also had 23 points and added nine rebounds.

Patton finished with 8 points, Dexter Jokinen 3 and Levi Buck 1. Nick Young dished out three assists.

Kai Osaka and Blake Sanders had 11 each for Bush, which suffered it first loss in four games.
