Editor,

The South Whidbey Nerdy Birdies, the Falcon math team, succeeded at the Washington State High School Math Competition last weekend. The teams placed first and third in the “topical contest” category and third in “team problem” among all Division 2 schools in the state. Team members are Aaron Biehler (11), Dylan McKnight (9), Elliot Fortney (9), Elsa Layman (11), Kate Morgan (11), Solomon Hilliard (10), Stella Bobbitt (9) and Teddy Alexander (10).The students are led by community volunteer Clyde Monma. The Nerdy Birdies started in 2014. They have placed in the top 3 every year since and have placed 1st six times. The Nerdy Birdies also participates in the monthly Northwest Math League friendly competitions with eight other regional high schools. The Math Olympiad program started with a 6th grade team in 2010 and has grown to include Grades 6-12. The program is supported, in part, by a SWSD grant as part of the Highly Capable Learners Program.
