Let’s elect Van Pelt as clerk | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

As this campaign season gains momentum and candidates throw their hats in the ring, I am particularly interested in the race for county clerk.

Since I worked in the clerk’s office for 22 years and was then elected as county clerk for two terms, I believe my background qualifies me to recognize the most qualified person for this office, although anyone researching the candidates in this race could reach the same conclusion. There are two candidates running for clerk with diametrically opposed backgrounds and experience; one a five-year veteran of the clerk’s office and court system, the other a newcomer to the legal arena with a background in healthcare.

I was privileged to hire Debra Van Pelt as a deputy clerk and she worked for me for the last five years I was in office. During that time, Debra devoted her attention to learning the vast array of duties and responsibilities required of a deputy clerk.

It soon became apparent to me that this was more than a job to her, it was a career path. Debra took every opportunity to educate herself in the legally mandated duties and principles involved in running the clerk’s office and in effectively serving both the citizens and legal community of Island County.

Deb has consistently demonstrated her people skills, management style and expertise. She worked to promote team participation among my staff, earning her the respect and support of her co-workers and peers.

It is apparent to me that Debra cares about the stability of the clerk’s office and has the knowledge and experience necessary to lead the office through these economically difficult times. In my opinion, Debra is the candidate qualified to be elected to the position of county clerk.
