Letter: Banning books denies youth the truth of history

Ban books? Never we do not ban books in this country, do we? This is a free democratic society. Not a dictatorship yet Ron DeSantis! Perhaps we should ban his books so he can know what it feels like to have one misguided person take your work away from a society that may or may not want to know what you have to say.

The GOP claims they are protecting children, from what? Their own history, or the opinions of people other than old white men? Perhaps our young people want to know what went on before them. Who but a member of the GOP would dare tell us what we can read or say, the arrogance of this act! As if he knows better than we what to read, what to be interested in, even what words to use.

This is getting dangerously close to authoritarianism. Ask any librarian what they think about banned books, most have been fighting for books, forever! They do not want this right infringed on, nor should we. I would hope parents would want their children to have a complete knowledge of our history, the good and the bad, nothing hidden. Sadly, our rights are being encroached on, none other than by the Supreme Court. Hopefully these transgressions on our rights can be restored.

In the meantime, we must remain vigilant, speak out against, those who would try and take away our rights, books and even our speech. Don’t let the fear the GOP would envelop us in make us run for cover. Everyone deserves access to all books that interest them and the right to speak out if these rights are infringed on. This America no one should attempt to ban anything from us.
