LETTER TO THE EDITOR | A history lesson is needed

To the editor:
Our founding fathers set up the Constitution with many checks and balances, because one of their greatest fears was government itself.
They knew that unchecked government could end their creation of a free people. By creating free people — the most free the world had ever known — they unleashed a period of growth and prosperity that became a marvel.
We are witnessing the end of that freedom. As government grows and reaches into every aspect of our lives, individual liberty is disappearing. The federal government was granted only a few jobs in the Constitution, but its control is growing beyond imagination — including even banks and major industries. That was never the intent.
The courts were to hold the other branches of government to the law — now they have begun to create law. That was never the intent.
As you watch the economy implode in the coming months, as you watch our small community businesses, overtaxed and overregulated, go out of business; remember the lesson that is taught. Only free people, following their own dreams, responsible for their own lives, can create prosperity.
A nanny government cannot create anything but dependence — and expensive dependence at that.
