LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Give thanks for our merchants

Published 8:43 am Sunday, November 23, 2008

To the editor:

At this time of year, when we pause to reflect on all of the things we have to be thankful for, it seems this particular year would be a good year to be thankful for our merchants and what they mean to our community. With our economy clouded and household budgets reduced, our merchants, whose existence through the winter has always been a challenge, will be challenged as never before.

Most times we give little thought to them. They are just here, and seemingly always will be. They are just there when they employ our friends, neighbors and teenagers. They are just there when the high school yearbook needs a sponsor. They are just there when the town needs to be decorated for Christmas. They are just there when the community needs a helping hand. These good people and their employees are a very positive part of the fabric of our community and a reflection of us all.

So, as we approach Christmas, please remember that our merchants and their employees will need us to be there for them this year. They will need us to shop South Whidbey. It would be hard to picture a Christmas without them.
