LETTER TO THE EDITOR: It’s easy to find local produce

I can relate with Margaret Walton’s frustration over the lateness of the fruit and vegetable season this year. The wet, cool spring did delay most crops; yet, if you know where to look, the summer season has been in full swing for weeks.

While Ms. Walton laments that raspberries are far overdue, we’ve had a steady supply of Whidbey-grown berries at the South Whidbey Tilth Farmers Market since the beginning of the month. As we move through the season, even more local berries are appearing — currants, gooseberries, marionberries; all of the fruits that usually get overshadowed by their better-known cousins.

Though it may be smaller than the Bayview Market, South Whidbey Tilth is a nearby alternative (just up the road) with its focus firmly on Whidbey-grown produce, and it’s now open on Wednesday evenings, as well as Saturdays, so it’s easy to find your early raspberries, zucchini, tomatoes or whatever it is you’re looking for.
