LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Salmon barbecue was a big success

To the editor:

Our thanks to all those who came to the third annual Coupeville Lions Salmon Barbecue that was held in the Town Park on Sunday, Sept. 7.

The event was a success due to the support of 255 members of the community who came to the event to enjoy a beautiful day, have some delicious Native Indian prepared salmon and enjoy a free concert.

Thanks must go to the town of Coupeville and Mayor Nancy Conard for allowing us use of the park and sponsoring the Concerts on the Cove last concert with the An-O-Chords. Our special thanks go to Rosie James and Billy Bailey of the Samish Tribe for preparing the salmon and samples of fry-bread, as well as sharing their heritage and history through food, story and song. Finally, I want to thank our club’s fellow Lions for all the work that made it happen.

The money raised will go 100 percent back into the Coupeville community through scholarships to Coupeville High School students, improvement projects to parks and historic structures, and grants to local groups.

We will continue in the tradition of “We Serve” as we have for the last 70 plus years and look forward to doing much more for our community in the future.

Plans are being made for next year’s salmon barbecue in the park and we plan to make it event better and bigger than this year. See you on Sept. 13, 2009 — the weekend following Labor Day.
