LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Whidbey trail users shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds them

Editor,

As a lifelong equestrian, I was very disheartened after reading the letter to the editor regarding horse poop on local trails.

I don’t ride my horse at Community Park, but definitely enjoy the trails at Putney Woods. Upon moving to the island nearly eight years ago, I was thrilled to find a local venue for trail riding. This venue would not be available if not for the efforts of the late Gary Putney and Back Country Horsemen, a very small but dedicated group of horse enthusiasts who are willing to donate their time and resources to maintain the trails for all users, bike riders and dog lovers included.

I’m willing to share the trails with other users, even if it may cause me an inconvenience. Horses don’t always respond positively to barking dogs or fast moving bikes, but as riders we know the risk. Please, trail enthusiasts, don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
