Discover a trove at the Trash Treasure sale

A South End community tradition of scavenging is making a return this year with more stuff than ever before.

St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland is holding its 58th Trash & Treasure sale this Saturday, April 30th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The beloved event is an opportunity to sift through a plethora of gently used items while raising money for good causes. This year, proceeds benefit Episcopal Relief & Development’s Ukraine Crisis Response, Island Church’s soup kitchen, Island Senior Resources Medical Transport Fund and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust.

Since the sale skipped a couple of years because of the pandemic, that means there will be three years’ worth of donated goods up for grabs.

“I think our stuff is a higher quality than it’s ever been,” said Susan Sandri, an organizer for the sale. “We just have loads of treasures. It’s going to be an exciting year.”

Housewares, jewelry, artifacts, antiques, office supplies, linens, toys, sporting goods and tools are just some of the items that can be found at the sale.

Sandri said some of this year’s treasures include a collection of Mariners memorabilia, dozens of vintage silk Japanese obi, an antique erector set and an electric organ, among other things.

“What’s extraordinary changes from year to year,” she said.

Hungry shoppers can also opt to buy sausage rolls, soups or pie at the Chapel Cafe.

At the end of the day, leftover items go to Good Cheer.

Since 1962, the event has raised a quarter of a million dollars for Whidbey Island charities.

Donations for the sale are still being accepted at the church until 2 p.m. this Thursday. Clothing, books, magazines, computers, large exercise equipment, old TVs, large furniture and tires are not accepted, and neither is anything broken or stained.

“This is carefully cleaned, restored, repaired, treasured things from people’s homes or collections or estates,” Sandri said.
