The first day of candidate filing week in Island County came with a few surprises.

Candidate filing week runs through Friday. More than 60 local government positions will be on the ballot throughout Island County.

A third candidate for Oak Harbor mayor filed to run for the position. Nick Green, the owner of Whidbey Island Limo Service, is new to city politics.

City Councilmember Shane Hoffmire and Ronnie Wright, a businessman, indicated earlier this year that they plan to run for mayor. They both made it official on Monday.

Six candidates filed for the three Oak Harbor Council seats that will appear on the ballot. Chris Wiegenstein, the owner of a counseling service, and Pat Harman, a former mayor candidate, filed to run for the seat currently held by Beth Munns.

Barbara Armes, a local government enthusiast, and John Chaszar, a planning commission member, filed to run for the seat that used to belong to Dan Evans, who resigned. Tara Hizon filed for reelection. Eric Marshall, who was appointed to the council, filed for his seat.

All five of the Oak Harbor School Board positions will be on the ballot because of resignations. So far, School Board President Lynn Goebel will face Karen Lesetmoe, who ran unsuccessfully as a Republican last fall against state Rep. Dave Paul. William Smith filed for a two-year, unexpired term currently held by Sharon Jensen.

There were no unexpected candidates in Coupeville so far. Mayor Molly Hughes and Councilmembers Rick Walti and Jenny Bright filed for reelection. Coupeville School Board member Alison Perera also filed for reelection. Nobody filed for the Port of Coupeville Monday.

Likewise, no surprise candidates popped up on South Whidbey. Langley Councilmember Thomas Gill and Kennedy Horstman, a member of the Dismantling Systemic Racism Advisory Group, filed to run for mayor. They both announced earlier that they are seeking the position. Mayor Scott Chaplin isn’t running in the election.

Langley Councilmember Craig Cyr filed for reelection and Chris Carlson, a member of the finance committee, filed for Gill’s seat.

Brook Willeford and Marnie Jackson filed to run for reelection to the South Whidbey School Board. Joe Greenheron, who was appointed, filed for his position.

Greg Easton, who was recently appointed to the Port of South Whidbey Board of Commissioners, filed for the position. Eric Anderson filed for reelection to the hospital board.
